“Wow, blast from the past.”

The mind-numbing task had left an unfortunate amount of brain power free to mull over everything that had happened in the past 24 hours, so I was glad to look up to see Desi leaning against the fence only five or so minutes after Oliver had left.

“Right?” I forced a smile that, at Desi’s amusement as I flicked another prong load into my wheelbarrow, slowly melted into a real one.

“I thought they’d sent Oliver out to do this?” She asked, swinging herself easily over the fence and coming to grab up his abandoned fork; the pair of us immediately falling into an easy rhythm beside each other.

“He got freaked by a spider,” I blurted out before I could stop myself, knowing that Desi would find it as odd as I did.

“Right. So, what was it, a red back?” She asked, gallantly trying to hide her surprise.

“No.”

“Funnel web?”

“No.”

“White tip?”

“No.”

“OK,” she raised her dark eyebrows questioningly, “I’m out.”

“It was a huntsman.”

“Oh...well, I guess they can bite.”

I let out a mirthless laugh, which, like my smile from a second ago, turned into a real one as I saw how hard Desi was working to not look as confused as I was.

“I appreciate the effort, but I think this one’s beyond us,” I reassured her.

She nodded and we continued working in silence for a couple of minutes until the gnawing feeling of unease in my stomach became too strong to ignore, and I found myself asking, “It shouldn’t matter, should it? That he was so freaked out by something so normal?”

“Nah, I don’t reckon.” Desi paused, waved a couple of flies away from her face and then asked, “Why? Does it?”

“I don’t know…maybe?” I winced as I realised how awful and unfair I was being. “But it shouldn’t!”

“I wouldn’t stress about it.” Desi dragged her almost full wheelbarrow further along the run and dug into a new patch with vigour. “You were shovelling shit as a nipper; maybe Bridunna’s just ruined you for the real world.”

“Well, I know that’s true,” I said bitterly, regretting the words instantly as Des looked across at me in concern.

She straightened, shoving an errant curl back behind her ear as she asked, “You wanna talk about it?”

“It?”

“It. This. The ‘Grace and Alex are back in Bridunna’ show,” Desi clarified.

“Ah, that.” I pulled at my ponytail, feeling the oil on the strands remind me that I hadn’t had a shower…not that that was what was making me feel dirty just then. “It’s that bad then?”

“Well, there’s plenty of people tuning in, if that’s what you’re asking. Probably trying to drown yourself in punch last night didn’t help any. What was that all about?”

It only took me a split second to push aside my random concerns about Oliver’s spider squeamishness and remember why I’d turned to that noxious liquid the night before. Alex stirring shit. Alex disappearing. Alex riding off with Maxxie. Alex, Alex, Alex.

“I’d had…words with Alex,” I explained.

“Ah.” She didn’t waste words, Desi, didn’t question what she already knew.
